VietJet Air has announced plans to launch its first flights to mainland China.

In a press conference on 8 April, the Vietnamese low-cost carrier revealed that it will commence services to the cities of Hangzhou and Kunming later this year. The services will operate from Nha Trang and Danang, and are likely to primarily serve Chinese tourists heading to Vietnam’s central beaches.

And VietJet’s Chinese expansion could gather pace in future; the airline has also applied for permission to operate commercial services to five other Chinese cities: Chengdu, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Ningbo and Guiyang.

VietJet currently operates a series of international routes to destinations in Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea and Cambodia, using its fleet of Airbus A320-series aircraft.

Mainland China is the largest source of international visitors to Vietnam.
