Vietnam Airlines will launch its first ever direct flights to the US in 2018.

The National Times newspaper reported the move this week, but no further details have been revealed with regards to the exact launch date, destinations or flight frequencies.

The services have been enabled by the arrival of Vietnam Airlines’ new fleet of long-haul aircraft, including Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350s, which make trans-Pacific routes more efficient to operate.

Earlier this year, Vietnam Airlines’ general manager for Germany, Ngo Tri Hung, told Travel Daily that the national carrier is “prepar[ing] for its direct route plan to the US in the near future”.

“With our network expansion and strategy, we hope to strengthen our airline competitiveness through global air connectivity,” he added.
