Vietnamese budget airlines sign major deals with Airbus

Two Vietnamese low-cost carriers have signed major aircraft deals with Airbus.
Vietjet has placed a firm order with the European company for 20 A321 aircraft worth approximately US$2.4 billion at currently list prices. The deal includes 10 A321s and A321neos – the new fuel-efficient version of the single-aisle jet.
And Jetstar Pacific, which is part-owned by Vietnam Airlines and Qantas, has placed an order for 10 A320s valued at US$980 million.
Both agreements were signed during French President François Hollande’s state visit to Vietnam. Also in Vietnam to oversee the deals was Fabrice Brégier, president & CEO of Airbus, who said the orders “reinforce the position of the A320 as the single aisle aircraft of choice for airlines in Vietnam”.
For Vietjet, this marks the latest in a series of high-profile aircraft orders. The LCC, which only commenced operations in December 2011, agreed to buy 100 aircraft from Boeing earlier this year during President Obama’s state visit to Vietnam. It also has outstanding orders for more than 100 Airbus jets, not including this week’s deal.
Jetstar Pacific’s fleet expansion efforts have been more conservative; the LCC currently operates 14 Airbus A320s and A321s, and has a similar number on order.
