Virgin Australia has announced plans to launch direct flights between Melbourne and Hamilton Island, in Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands.
From 15 August 2013, the airline will commence four weekly flights on the route, departing on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. This will be reduced to three weekly flights during the February-June low-season. Virgin Australia will serve the route using a 176-seat Boeing 737-800 with both business and economy classes.
Jetstar is currently the only airline operating direct between Melbourne and Hamilton Island.
“Melbourne to Hamilton Island has been a monopoly route for many years and we are very pleased to be bringing competition to the market from today,” said Virgin Australia’s chief commercial officer, Judith Crompton.
“Hamilton Island remains a very popular holiday destination for Australians. We continue to review customer demand and the local community and tourism operators have told us that a direct service to Melbourne would be beneficial in bringing more choice to those flying in and out of this popular destination. We already fly direct from Brisbane and Sydney and are delighted to now offer leisure travellers a direct service from Melbourne,” she added.
The Melbourne route becomes Virgin Australia’s third direct connection to Hamilton Island, following existing flights from Brisbane and Sydney.
