Combined holidays and the ‘World Cup effect’ in the second quarter of the year lowered the potential for Eurostar’s first half results, the train operator has said.
Numbers released by the company show its passenger numbers went up 2% to 5 million while sales revenues increased 0.5% to GBP456m.
A Bank Holiday during the Easter period and those postponing bookings for the World Cup impacted its leisure traffic, although business travel has been up 6% compared to the same period last year.
Nicolas Petrovic, chief executive of Eurostar said: “Whilst a number of factors in the second quarter of the year lead to a dampening in demand, we are now beginning to see a more benign trading environment with encouraging signs of economic stability in France as well as the UK. These more favourable conditions have helped deliver strong growth in business travel across our markets.”
