Italy’s capital Rome was the most searched travel destination on Google.co.uk in 2013, the search engine has revealed.

European cities featured heavily in the list compiled of what UK internet users searched on the website, with Amsterdam in third place followed by Palma and Magaluf in fourth and fifth respectively.

Other European cities that featured were Bruges at eighth and Venice at ninth.

New York appeared second in the list of most searches for travel in 2013, while Thailand’s capital Bangkok was sixth and Sydney came in at seventh.

Mauritius finalised the top 10 travel destination list in the annual Google Zeitgeist, which tracks not only which travel destinations were popular but names, news and films.
