Thailand-based Onyx Hospitality Group has held a ground-breaking ceremony for its first Amari hotel in Sri Lanka.

The Amari Galle will be a new upscale hotel located on the Galle Road, approximately 2.5km north of the Galle Fort. Once completed, the property will offer 172 rooms, a swimming pool, gym, spa, banqueting facilities and two restaurants.

Onyx first arrived in Sri Lanka in June 2014 with the launch of the Ozo Colombo, and will open another Ozo hotel in Kandy in April this year.

“We are thrilled to be breaking ground on our third project in Sri Lanka,” said Peter Henley, president & CEO of Onyx. “Tourism is thriving and we think a full service hotel product like Amari will be very well received in the market.

“With the array of historical sites and the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality, Galle is an obvious location for our next Amari property,” he added.

Amari is Onyx’s flagship brand, with hotels currently operating in Thailand, Qatar and Bangladesh. As well as the Sri Lankan property, Onyx has a pipeline of eight more Amari projects in China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Maldives.
