Work starts on T2 at Seoul’s Incheon airport

Work has started on the new Terminal 2 at Seoul’s Incheon International Airport.
The US$2.5 billion project will see the development of a new 687,000m² terminal with 72 gates, effectively doubling the airport’s size. The project, which will be completed in two phases, also comprises a second airport control tower, a railway station, parking facilities and a connection to the existing terminal.
“We designed Terminal 2 to make travel at Incheon even more compelling, offering people unprecedented ease and convenience,” said Keith Thompson, who heads the aviation design practice of Gensler, the company leading the new terminal project.
“It’s a large international terminal, yet it will be very intuitive to navigate and present unique experiences like the vast interior gardens featuring native Korean foliage. Travellers will see this as the new benchmark for airports,” he added.
Although it is almost twice as big as Terminal 1, Gensler said the new terminal would be “designed for clarity”, with clear signage directing passengers to the ticketing hall, check-in counters and security locations. The terminal will include indoor gardens with waterfalls, koi ponds and streams, while “vertical cores” will connect the floors, opening up the terminal and allowing passengers to navigate more easily. It will also be have retail outlets.
Incheon currently handles more than 35 million passengers per year, but by 2020 it is expected to expand to an annual capacity of 100 million passengers, making it one of the world’s busiest airports.
