Construction work will start on Beijing’s new international airport this year.
Commencing in the first half of 2014, the project is expected to take about four years to complete, with the new hub handling up to 45 million passengers every year when it opens in 2018.
The airport’s development is expected to cost approximately CNY 70 billion (US$ 11.5bn).
Located in the southern district of Daxing, next to the satellite city of Langfang, the new airport will be created on approximately 700,000m² of farmland. It will feature four runways in its first phase, with a further two to be added at a later date, and will be connected to Beijing city centre by three highways and a new subway line.
The new airport is also expected to include a low-cost carrier terminal, which will house the operations of China United Airlines. The carrier, which is currently based at Beijing’s Nanyuan Airport, recently announced plans to move to a low-cost business model.
Beijing’s current airport, Capital International, is the world’s second busiest, handling more than 80 million passengers per year.
