Xiamen Airlines has finalised an order for six Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners.
The US$1.3 billion deal, which was originally announced in May 2011, has now been approved by the Chinese government, and will see the mainland airline take delivery two B787s in 2014, following by the remaining four in 2015. Deliveries are expected to commence on 25 July next year.
“Adding 787s to our all-Boeing fleet is a strategic decision to facilitate our international expansion plans,” said Che Shanglun, president & CEO of Xiamen Airlines. “The range and efficiency of the 787 makes it an ideal fit in our new, non-stop international routes.”
Based in Xiamen, the coastal city in southeast China’s Fujian province, Xiamen Airlines currently operates China’s only all-Boeing fleet, with 86 B737s and six B757s. It also has outstanding orders for 30 new B737 MAX aircraft and six COMAC ARJ regional jets.
A member of the SkyTeam alliance, it operates both domestic and international services to destinations including Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul, with services to Bangkok and Jakarta expected to commence in the coming weeks. Following the introduction of the Dreamliners from July 2014, the airline plans to launch new long-haul routes to Europe, North America and Australia.
Xiamen Airlines will become the third mainland Chinese carrier to operate the Dreamliner, following China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines, both of which took delivery of their first B787s earlier this summer. Air China has also placed order for 15 Dreamliners.
