YHA is investing £4 million (US$6.3m) in a high-end hostel in Cardiff.
The group purchased the three-storey former Mercure Lodge Hotel on East Tyndall Street earlier this year, and will reopen it as the YHA Cardiff Central in March 2015 following a £500,000 facelift.
The revamped property will offer 92 rooms, all with free Wi-Fi, plus three meeting rooms, a restaurant and a self-catering kitchen. YHA will retain the former hotel’s upper floor as premium rooms, featuring queen-sized beds and TVs.
“Retaining the upper floor as premium rooms will enable us to tap into a new market and maximise occupancy and revenue, allowing us to increase the valuable work YHA does to reach out to young people and provide them with new experiences,” said Caroline White, chief executive of YHA.
YHA Cardiff Central will join the association’s 160-strong network of properties throughout England and Wales. Rates for shared rooms start from £16.
