Thirty nine companies have signed up to take part in the first Travel Trade Crusade race to Amsterdam, its organisers have announced.

Advantage Travel Centres, Avis, Beachcomber Tours, Holiday Extras, Kuoni, Jayne Peirce Recruitment Solutions, Royal Caribbean and Travel Counsellors are amongst the companies who have entered a car into the charity race.

Cars range from self-decorated banger vehicles worth less than GBP500 to an everyday car, with bonus points awarded to the more imaginative cars.

Teams will also receive points for completing challenges en route to Amsterdam. Each team has chosen a charity to raise money for, while GBP8 of each entry fee will go towards carbon-reducing and sustainability charity Beyond Carbon (formerly TICOS). It will commence on 12 July form Calais and take in five European countries.

The event has been organised by Sarah Archer from Beachcomber Tours after she entered her first banger race last year and encouraged others to join in.

“My first-ever banger car rally was a real eye opener. I knew it would be fun, but the experience really exceeded all expectations and, best of all, we succeeded in raising a significant amount of money for some very worthy causes,” she explained. “I wanted to share that feeling with my fellow travel trade colleagues who, as well as being a generous bunch, are known for loving a bit of fun and being up for a challenge.”
