The EU could push the ETS launch back to April 2014

The European Union’s controversial Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) for airlines will be put on hold for a year, it has been reported.

The unnamed source within the EU told AFP that European ministers and lawmakers have reached an agreement to postpone the implementation of the ETS until April 2014, giving the EU more time to work out a global solution with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The ETS would have placed an extra fee burden on airlines who are already facing an increase in Air Passenger Duty (APD) on 1 April. ETS has faced criticism by non-EU countries, including China, Russia and the US, which believe that imposing levies on flight-time outside EU airspace exceeds the EU’s mandate.
