Carnival hit with bacteria claim

A lawsuit has been filed against Carnival Cruise Line over suspected bacteria in its ship’s hot tubs.
Class action on behalf of several passengers has been made against the cruise line after complaints from passengers onboard Carnival Paradise and Carnival Fascination, according to the Miami Herald.
Carnival Paradise passenger Tab Lankford has claimed he contracted ‘hot tub folliculitis’ after spending time in a whirlpool onboard the ship and is now seeking compensation for a week in hospital and US$70,000 medical bills.
A report from Lankford’s lawyer John Billera said the infection had caused the holidaymaker’s leg to turn black but was saved from being amputated. When Lankford contacted Carnival it is alleged the customer service agent said another 50 or so passengers had also suffered from a similar illness on the same cruise in December 2011.
A further allegation said Maria Osoriocano and Andrew Smith both became infected with MRSA and staphylococcus aureus after using the hot tub on Fascination back in May 2012.
Osoriocano and Smith’s attorney Sean Cleary told the US newspaper: “Our clients, and we believe many others, have suffered horrendous infections from bathing in Carnival’s hot tubs. One problem is that these infections may take a few days to surface. By the time the passengers know they have been exposed, it is often too late to report the problem on the ship.”
