Viceroy Hotel Group has announced its New York hotel will open on 9 October.

The newly-built hotel will open in the heart of Manhattan with 240 rooms and facilities including a rooftop bar overlooking the midtown area of the city. It will also feature the Kingside restaurant developed with hospitality company Gerber Group and US celebrity chef Marc Murphy.

Rooms will feature technology and design from Beats by Dr Dre in the brand’s first tie-up with a hotel. Features will include a smartphone that guests can use to change TV channels, contact concierge and take calls, even outside of the hotel. This can include a sim card provided by Viceroy to avoid roaming charges.

Speaking to media in London about the launch this week, Bill Walshe, CEO of Viceroy said the hotel is a game-changer for the brand and had been waiting some time to open in the US city.

“The launch of the Viceroy New York is a game-changer for the company, having had the brand visibility we have in the US and Caribbean. The fact we have not had a property here before is a surprise to our customers,” he said.

“We had been waiting for the right location, building and setting for the opening and with this had the chance to create a distinct downtown vibe in a grown-up location.”

Walshe said the hotel is expected to run on occupancies in the mid-70s and will open when several events are running in the city, creating a buzz around its cultural base.

Response from the UK market is said to have been healthy, with sales teams on calls in the UK this week to speak to leisure, business and group companies.

“There is so much interest here that our teams have packed schedules,” Michael Bridges, director of sales and marketing at the hotel told Travel Daily.

The hotel group showed additional commitment to the UK market earlier this year by opening a London office headed by Jane O’Shea. The UK is the group’s third biggest market after domestic audiences.

Aside from its New York opening, Viceroy is also due to open a hotel in Dubai on Palm Jumeirah; a 68-room hotel in Turkey and has signed a letter of intent for a hotel in Colombia.

“Our openings reflect where our customers want to see us,” said Walshe.
