United cuts CO2 emissions

United Airlines reduced its CO2 emissions by more than 811,643 metric tons in 2012, and is on track to cut fuel consumption by 85 million gallons (322m litres) in 2013.
The achievement was detailed in the airline’s annual Corporate Responsibility Report, which was released last week and highlights a series of measures being taken to reduce United’s impact on the environment.
As part of its drive towards a more fuel-efficient fleet, the airline increased its orders for new Boeing and Airbus jets, with more than new 260 aircraft planned to replace older, less efficient models. United has also partnered AltAir Fuels to bring renewable jet fuel to its Los Angeles hub as early as 2014, while its ‘Eco-Skies Community Grants’ initiative offers US$50,000 worth of donations to support environmental projects.
“Throughout our hubs and the cities where we operate, we are committed to supporting diverse programmes and organisations that benefit our people and our communities,” said United’s chairman, president & CEO, Jeff Smisek. “We are proud of United’s commitment to running an environmentally and socially responsible airline.”
United participates in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), publicly disclosing information on its carbon footprint.
