United Airlines is introducing new, eco-friendly coffee cups onboard its aircraft.
To be rolled out on all United flights from mid-March, the new InCycle cup, manufactured by US-based technology company MicroGREEN, is fully recyclable and made from up to 50% recycled materials. The cup will replace the non-recyclable styrofoam cups the airline currently uses for its hot beverages.
MicroGREEN is able to manufacture 4.5 cups from a single recycled water bottle, using an additive-free recycling process. The cup is also insulated, keeping the drink warm.
“At United, we are constantly working to improve the sustainability of our products and reduce our waste at the same time,” said Angela Foster-Rice, United’s managing director of global environmental affairs & sustainability. “This new cup is not only aligned with our overall ‘Eco-Skies’ commitment to the environment, it is another way our customers can feel good about flying with us.”
Over the past six years, United has recycled more than 10 million kg of onboard waste, including aluminium cans, paper and plastic.
