Shangri-La finally opened its hotel in London’s The Shard skyscraper today.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Lord Sebastian Coe helped cut the ribbon to the hotel, which is located on the 34th to 52nd floors of Western Europe’s tallest building.
The hotel is the city’s first high-rise hotel with views of the Thames, Parliament and Tower of London.
It opens a year later than originally planned after design changes and problems with fitting the hotel caused delays.
In April 2013 the opening was pushed back to the fourth quarter of 2013, only to be delayed again before finally opening its doors today from GBP450 a night.
It has 202 rooms and suites with venues including three dining outlets and a spa.
“The sweeping views from Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard provide an entirely new perspective on London. It is a spectacular setting in which to introduce our signature Asian-inspired hospitality to the U.K.” said Shangri-La president and CEO Greg Dogan. “The master architect Renzo Piano had amazing vision with his design of The Shard. We’ve created a unique hotel that complements the iconic building and makes the most of the 360-degree view of London.”
Darren Gearing, executive vice president and hotel general manager added: “Today marks an important milestone in London’s hotel landscape and the ongoing development of the South Bank Community and the borough of Southwark. We are thrilled to open our doors and be an integral part of this local community.”
The property is Hong Kong-based Shangri-La’s 83rd hotel and its third in Europe, having opened a hotel in Paris in 2010 and Istanbul in 2013.
