AirAsia India is now ready to fly.
The carrier has received its Air Operator’s Permit (AOP) or the flying license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) yesterday evening. The airline which has been waiting to get necessary approvals from the Indian authorities is likely to begin operations any time in the next one to three months.
“History has been made today in Aviation, Everything has been hard for AirAsia but we never give up. Today AirAsia India has got approval,” Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia announced on his twitter handle yesterday.
“We would realistically start operations in anywhere between one to three months given the fact that a new government will be in place soon,” Mittu Chandilya, Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia India was quoted by Economic Times.
Talking on the network, Chandilya added, “Out network isn’t finalised yet but we are looking at a 60:40 ratio of Tier II routes to metro routes with 60 being Tier II. The first flight could be out of Chennai but that may change, however AirAsia India will most likely fly to all metros but exclude Mumbai.”
“The consumer will win. Well done Indian government and DGCA for putting people first and not (heeding) vested interests. More power to the people,” Fernandes told the newspaper.
The validity of the permit is still subject to Delhi High Court decision. AirAsia India is a joint venture between Tata Sons, AirAsia Berhad and Telestra Tradeplace received the flying license nearly a year after the venture was announced.
