Luxury cruise operator Seabourn has signed an agreement with UNESCO to help raise funds for, and educate its passengers about, world heritage.

As part of the multi-year tie-up, Seabourn has committed to raising US$1 million for UNESCO. This will be achieved through passenger donations during shore excursions to UNESCO World Heritage sites.

In addition, Seabourn will create a series of World Heritage Discovery Tours at historic ports and employ onboard guest speakers to talk about UNESCO’s conservation work.

“Seabourn is proud to be partnering with UNESCO to promote and support sustainable tourism,” said Seabourn’s president, Richard Meadows. “Through this partnership we are committed to providing our guests with a deeper appreciation and understanding of the many World Heritage sites we visit around the world and the important work UNESCO is doing.”

Irina Bokova, director-general of UNESCO, commented; “With this partnership UNESCO and Seabourn truly demonstrate our shared commitment in safeguarding World Heritage by promoting sustainable tourism at these iconic destinations. The partnership enables us to reach the travelling public with our conservation message which is universal in scope and so important to the dialogue and mutual understanding that are needed to nurture a culture of peace.”

Seabourn currently includes more than 150 UNESCO World Heritage sites in its itineraries.
