AirAsia expects its new Indian carrier to break-even earlier than its previous ventures.
Bernama reported the group’s CEO, Tony Fernandes, as saying that the company will draw on its experiences of launching new airlines in other countries to help AirAsia India’s operations.
“The more planes you have the quicker we will make money. We plan to have six planes by year-end,” Fernandes was quoted saying at the official launch of the new airline last week.
“It took us two years in Thailand and two-and-a-half years in Indonesia to break even, but in India we got a lot more experience,” he added.
AirAsia India launched on 12 July with flights from Bengaluru to Goa. It has since added a new route connecting Bengaluru with Chennai and plans to launch Bengaluru-Kochi flights on 20 July.
And Fernandes said that it would now seek rights to operate international services from India.
AirAsia now operates units in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and India, and last week confirmed plans to relaunch its Japanese low-cost carrier in 2015.
AirAsia India is a joint venture with Indian conglomerate Tata Sons.
