Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has announced that all economy class passengers departing from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will now be required to use self-service check-in facilities.

Effective 15 July, the new ruling means passengers will now have the option of checking in online, via the airline’s mobile app, or using a check-in kiosk at KLIA.

The conventional check-in counters for economy class passengers at KLIA will be replaced with baggage drop counters, although two “special handling counters” will remain open for unaccompanied children and disabled passengers. First and business class passengers will also still be allowed to use traditional check-in desks.

The national carrier said in a statement that the move was intended to save time, but it is also likely to be a means of reducing the airline’s operating costs.

“There are currently 34 kiosks available throughout the KLIA. Smartphone users may also download the free MHmobile app for easy check-in. First class and business class passengers who opt for the self check-in may do so through any of the options available,” MAS said.

It added that more self-service options, such as self baggage tagging and the automated baggage drop facilities, would be rolled out at KLIA in future.

“Once fully implemented, the self service check-in kiosk will allow passengers to take control of their check-in experience and manage their time accordingly,” said MAS’ customer services director, Salleh Ahmad Tabrani. “Using this technology and innovation to automate the check-in process will also ease congestion at check-in counters.

“Our guests will benefit as it reduces the time spent waiting in queue. We urge all MAS guests to take note of this new development,” he added.

Passengers need their booking reference or the 13-digit e-ticket number to perform the self check-in.
