Japanese low-cost carrier Vanilla Air has launched its first flights to Hong Kong.
The new service commenced on 2 November 2014 and will initially operate three times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays) using a 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.
But Vanilla Air plans to gradually increase the frequency of the flights, moving to a daily service from 1 February 2015 and twice daily from 21 February.
In launching the new route, Vanilla Air’s president, Tomonoru Ishii, said he wanted the Hong Kong public to embrace his new airline.
“The name of Vanilla Air was inspired by the sophisticated and fresh flavour of Vanilla popular in the world. I would like Vanilla Air to become the airline company as widely loved as vanilla and to continue to provide passengers with safe and comfortable services,” said Ishii.
Based at Tokyo’s Narita Airport, Vanilla Air is a subsidiary of All Nippon Airways (ANA). It emerged last year from the ashes of ANA’s AirAsia Japan joint venture, and retains many of the characteristics of its low-cost predecessor.
Hong Kong becomes Vanilla Air’s third international destination, following Seoul and Taipei.
