Qatar is gearing up to cater for a boost in tourism numbers. The country will soon receive four new start-up tourism projects funded by Qatar Development Bank (QDB).

One of the four start-up projects in tourism includes a luxury dhow dining Cruise Company. QDB has also recently entered into an agreement with Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) towards promoting the local tourism industry and as part of Qatar’s National Tourism Sector Strategy (NTSS) 2030.

The other companies are Doha Bus, a 4×4 leasing and services company; Q-tickets for development of a ticketing and mobile information centre; and Informa Tharawat, a conference and exhibition services company.

“These projects are a major step forward in QTA’s efforts to grow a sustainable tourism sector,” said Issa bin Mohamed al-Mohannadi, chairman of QTA.

QTA will support these investors by helping secure necessary licences and offer administrative guidance.

“While these opportunities are a critical starting point, there are countless opportunities for Qatari SMEs to find success in tourism and other strategic sectors,” said QDB CEO Abdulaziz bin Nasser al-Khalifa.

NTSS, which aims to position Qatar as a ‘world-class hub with deep cultural roots, is targeting seven million tourists annually by 2030 and the strategy is set to increase tourism’s total contribution to the national GDP (gross domestic product) and enhance the total tourist spend in Qatar to nearly US$10.7bn. QTA director Hassan al-Ibrahim had early this year mentioned that the aim is to have the tourism industry contribute a total of 5.1% to GDP by 2030, up from the current 2.6%.
