Parts of the US and Canada have faced flight disruption and cancellations as severe weather hit the country this week.

A wind chill advisory has been put in place for most of the northeast of the US by the National Weather Service, with strong winds and snow causing transport issues. Temperatures could plummet to -35F (-37C) in areas today.

Yesterday (6 January) more than 130 flights were cancelled to and from Chicago’s two airports, with New York also seeing some changes to schedules.

This morning several flights from Chicago, New York and Toronto have been delayed in landing at Heathrow Airport

United warned of disruption at Newark and Chicago’s airports as well as Washington.

Air Canada has warned strong wind conditions, snow and freezing fog could impact services to and from Boston, Calgary, Chicago, Denver, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, New York, Ottawa, Philadelphia, St John’s, Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria.

Travellers have been advised to check flight status.

States further south are expected to be hit by the colder weather by Thursday.

Twitter users are posting images of cities under snow.
