United offers carbon-neutral flights

United Airlines is offering passengers the chance to make their flight carbon-neutral this month.
As part of its Eco-Skies programme, the US airline will offset the carbon emissions of every flight made by its specially painted Boeing 737-900ER ‘Eco-Skies’ aircraft.
In collaboration with Sustainable Travel International, United will offset the aircraft’s total carbon emissions by supporting the GreenTrees project along the Mississippi River Valley. To date, GreenTrees has planted more than 36 million trees in the area.
The Eco-Skies aircraft also comes equipped with special wing-tips that reduce drag and save fuel.
“Our Eco-Skies plane represents United’s strong commitment to the environment, and we’re proud of the work we do to be an environmentally responsible airline and reduce our emissions,” said the airline’s managing director of environmental affairs & sustainability, Angela Foster-Rice.
Last year, United managed to reduce its CO2 emissions by more than one million metric tons, by cutting its fuel consumption by more than 110 million gallons (416 litres) – the equivalent of removing more than 225,000 cars from the road.
