ANA has unveiled plans to roll out a new type of economy class seat.

Designed by Japanese company Toyota Boshoku, the new seats will be 44.5cm wide and have a pitch of 78.7cm. The airline says they have been designed for “a wide range of body sizes and types”, with the height, length, seat angle and backrest intended to “evenly distribute pressure on the body”.

“Based on the idea that support is key to a passenger’s comfort, the seat is structured to limit muscle fatigue around the hip and maintain a relaxing posture by firmly supporting the pelvis,” ANA said.

The new seats will be rolled out from June 2015, initially on the airline’s domestic fleet of Boeing 767-300 aircraft. These twin-aisle jets will be configured in a 2-3-2 seating layout. By next year, ANA plans to have introduced 1,560 of the new seats across six B767s.

This will mark the first time that Toyota Boshoku has designed airline seats; the company has traditionally focused on the car sector.
