Air Canada has taken delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, the extended version of the new long-haul aircraft.
The national carrier took delivery of its first smaller B787-8 in May 2014 and will receive a total of 37 new Dreamliner aircraft by 2019, including eight B787-8s and 29 B787-9s.
The B787-9 has a capacity of 298 passengers – 47 more than the B787-8. This includes 30 seats in business class, 21 in premium economy and 247 in economy. The airline said the new Dreamliner’s “greater range and capacity will enable Air Canada to further expand its international network”.
“Air Canada is very excited to take delivery of its first Boeing 787-9. This new aircraft’s larger capacity and greater range will accelerate our international expansion strategy and allow us to offer customers more non-stop services to new international destinations,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines.
“Already, we have announced two new 787-9 routes to Delhi and Dubai from Toronto beginning this fall and as more of these aircraft enter the fleet we will expand our international network even further.”
The inaugural B787-9 flight will operate from Toronto to Delhi on 1 November 2015, and then from Toronto to Dubai on 3 November. But the aircraft will also be deployed on certain domestic routes in August and on services to Munich and Milan in September and October.
