The Thai resort town of Pattaya could be set for a Chinese tourism boom next year, when China Southern Airlines launches a new direct service from Shanghai.

Pattaya’s U-Tapao Airport has long been a base for Chinese charter flights, but from 22 January 2016 China Southern will commence a new scheduled service direct from Shanghai.

Flights will operate daily, departing Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport at 2215 and arriving at U-Tapao at 0130. The return flight will then take off at 0230 and get back into Shanghai at 0715.

China Southern will deploy a 152-seat, two-class Airbus A320 aircraft on the route, offering more than 1,000 inbound weekly seats into Pattaya and Thailand’s eastern seaboard.

Earlier this year, AirAsia launched flights connecting Pattaya with the Chinese cities of Nanning and Nanchang. The new flight marks China Southern’s first direct service to Thailand from Shanghai.
