The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels (HSH), the parent company of Peninsula Hotels, is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
The company was founded on 2 March 1866 as The Hongkong Hotel Company, making it the oldest company currently on the Hong Kong Companies Registry.
Its first purchase was the Oriental Hotel and the Keying & Marine House on Pedder Street. The site was then redeveloped to create The Hongkong Hotel, which opened in 1868. The company then developed the Peak Tramway in 1888 and HSH’s flagship hotel, The Peninsula Hong Kong, opened in 1928.
“I am delighted to announce that… The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Limited will celebrate its 150th anniversary during the year of 2016. Our long-term strategic mission is to build, maintain and create the highest quality assets that become legacies in their time,” said Clement Kwok, CEO of HSH.
“We are the oldest registered company in Hong Kong, and we believe we are one of the oldest hotel groups in the world in continuous operation. But we are a company that is still at a youthful stage in our development and growth strategy. We are still building for the future and it is an exciting time for us as a group.
“We are planning to hold a variety of private and public events later in 2016 to celebrate our anniversary, and in particular, to say thank you to the people of Hong Kong,” he added.
Today, HSH’s hotel portfolio covers 10 cities: Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Bangkok, Manila, New York, Chicago, Beverly Hills and Paris. And three new Peninsula Hotels are currently under development in London, Yangon and Istanbul.
