Genting Hong Kong has officially taken delivery of Genting Dream, the first high-end cruise ship to be operated by an Asian company and designed specifically for the Asian market.

The new vessel, which is the first ship in the fleet of Dream Cruises, was handed over to Genting in a ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. The occasion included a traditional flag-raising ceremony to mark the official transfer of the ship to its new owner.

Dream Cruises is the upscale sister brand to Hong Kong’s Star Cruises, and will cater specifically for the needs of the Asian – and mainly Chinese – market. It says it is targeting the “emerging generation of confident, independently-minded and affluent Asian travellers”.

The majority of the 2,000 crew members on Genting Dream will speak Chinese, and more than 100 of the cabins will be inter-connecting, enabling the ship to handle large families and groups.

Onboard facilities will include more than 35 F&B outlets, with several Asian options, a water park, spas, kids’ clubs, a cinema, casino, retail outlets and a Zouk nightclub. It will also feature shows of “China’s Got Talent” in the onboard theatre.

Following the handover, the 151,300-gross tonne ship will embark on its first major voyage from Germany to Guangzhou, where it is expected to arrive on 13 November 2016. From Guangzhou’s Nansha Port, Genting Dream will operate a series of weekend cruises to Hong Kong, and longer five- and seven-night voyages to southern China and Vietnam.

Dream Cruises’ second vessel, World Dream, is expected to launch in October 2017.
