ANA will become the first Japanese airline to operate an Airbus A380, according to reports.
The Kyodo news agency cited unnamed sources as saying on Friday that Japan’s largest airline will order three A380s worth almost US$1.3 billion at current list prices.
The new aircraft would become ANA’s first Airbus-made long-haul jets, joining its existing fleet of Boeing 777s and 787 Dreamliners. While the cabin configuration of the A380s has not been confirmed, the double-decker aircraft will become the highest capacity aircraft in ANA’s fleet.
This will not be the first time a Japanese airline has ordered the A380 however; in 2011 Skymark Airlines signed a deal with Airbus for six A380s, but later had to cancel them due to financial difficulties. The airline filed for bankruptcy protection in January 2015 and ANA is now supporting its restructuring efforts.
In total, ANA now operates a fleet of 207 passenger aircraft, with outstanding orders for a further 134, including the three A380s. Only 13 airlines in the world currently operate the A380.
