Korean carrier Asiana Airlines is reportedly considering suing a TV station for broadcasting fake, racially insensitive names of its staff after a newsreader was tricked into reading them out on air.

In a statement the company said: “The reputation of the four pilots and of the company had been seriously damaged by this report. The company is reviewing taking legal action against both KTVU-TV and the NTSB.”

British newspaper the Guardian reported that before the story was broadcast, KTVU-TV reported the names had been confirmed with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) – the relevant government body.

The NTSB has now released a statement apologising for the “inaccurate and offensive names” saying that “a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft”.

The fake names were Captain Sum Ting Wong, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk and Bang Ding Ow.
