Singapore’s Changi Airport Group (CAG) has organised its first ever Recycling Day, inviting all members of the aviation community to recycle office waste.

More than 20 organisations, including government agencies, airlines, ground handling operators and security units, are taking part in this inaugural airport-wide environmental effort. The programme’s overall goal is to collect 1,000kg of recyclable waste.

In addition to the usual office recyclable materials, such as paper, plastics and metal cans, airport agencies have been encouraged to bring electronic waste, or e-waste, to the main collection points located in each of Changi Airport’s three terminals. This will include unwanted office IT appliances such as photocopiers, computers, printers and external hard drives, as well as also other household appliances such as refrigerators and microwave ovens.

“Today is an exciting start to an even bigger sustainability road map. With a combined workforce of 32,000 across 200 companies, the airport community is the perfect hinterland that can immediately make a powerful impact on environmental sustainability. We have started to engage our partners, such as SATS and SIA Engineering Company, to understand their green policies. We have also discussed environmental action plans and how we can jointly embark on initiatives in the future. We remain hopeful that more partners will join us in our green journey together,” said Ng Bee Kay, CAG’s assistant vice president for corporate development & international relations.

Meanwhile, CAG is also partnering a local lamp recycling company. In the first nine months of this year, the airport has replaced about 34,000 lamps, sending the used lamps for recycling.
