The operators of Singapore’s Changi Airport have unveiled plans for a dramatic new development project.
Changi Airport Group (CAG) today (19 August 2013) released details of ‘Project Jewel’, a new mixed-use complex to be constructed on the site of the existing car park in front of T1, designed to expand the terminal’s capacity to 24 million passengers per year.
The 3.5-hectare plot of land will become home to an impressive glass and steel structure, housing new multi-storey basement car park, an expanded arrivals hall, larger baggage claim area and more taxi bays. But the most eye-catching feature will be the large indoor garden area, including a waterfall.
“We are very excited about this opportunity to create… an iconic global attraction that will capture the hearts of both tourists and Singaporeans,” said Lee Seow Hiang, CAG’s CEO.
“For tourists, we envisage Project Jewel to be a must-visit Singapore attraction, located strategically at the doorstep of one of the world’s busiest air hubs, and an extension of the Changi brand promise that many travellers worldwide have come to know us for. For Singaporeans, it will be an exciting world-class destination right here at home.”
The new area will connect T1 with T2 and T3, in an effort to improve inter-terminal connectivity. As such, CAG said the facility would provide a central hub for transit passengers, which currently account for approximately 30% of the airport’s total traffic.
“To strengthen Changi Airport’s competitive advantage… we must take deliberate steps to enhance Changi’s attractiveness as a stopover point. With Project Jewel, we are pleased to be developing an exciting product that will swing travellers to choose Changi Airport, and Singapore,” Lee added.
Upon completion, Project Jewel, together with the new T4 development, will boost Changi’s total capacity to 85m passengers per year. CAG will now work with CapitaMalls Asia on the concept and design of Project Jewel.
