China Airlines (CAL) will roll-out Air New Zealand’s Skycouch concept following the signing of a licensing agreement with the Auckland-based carrier.
Following the agreement, Taipei-based CAL will launch the economy flat-bed concept aboard its fleet of Boeing 777-300ER aircraft from September 2014.
Nicknamed the ‘cuddle class’, Air New Zealand’s Skycouch was originally introduced in 2011. It gives passengers booking two economy class seats the opportunity to purchase the third at a reduced rate, and convert the row of three seats into a two-person flat-bed.
“The Skycouch has transformed the economy flying experience and has been really well received by our customers since it was first introduced in 2011,” said Air New Zealand’s CEO, Christopher Luxon.
“We have seen strong interest from other airlines in the product and are exploring licensing agreements with other carriers on non-competing routes,” he added.
The CAL deal was originally announced in November 2013, but confidentiality terms prevented Air New Zealand naming its partner carrier until now.
