China Southern adds winglets to B737s
China Southern Airlines has decided to retrofit its fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft with ‘Blended Winglets’ – the wing tip extensions designed to make aircraft more fuel-efficient.
The deal, signed with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB), will see 40 B737-700 and 737-800 aircraft fitted with the wing tips. The airline has already equipped 32 of the aircraft with the devices.
“China Southern is operating in an ultra-competitive market and Blended Winglets contribute significantly to an airline’s profitability” said Craig McCallum, APB’s Director of Sales & Marketing. “With 40 additional aircraft utilising our technology, China Southern can expect almost US$11 million in additional contribution to profit annually, while reducing their CO2 output by more than 20,000 tonnes.”
Nearly 5,000 Blended Winglets are now in service on Boeing 737s, 757s, and 767s with more than 200 airlines.
