Two Chinese airlines have applied for permission to launch new flights from Chongqing to the US.

Air China and Hainan Airlines have both applied to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to launch three weekly trans-Pacific services from the western Chinese metropolis to Los Angeles. These would mark the first direct US flights from Chongqing, the huge city of more than 18 million people.

If approved, both services could start within six months and would be operated by the airlines’ Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Hainan Airlines has also applied for permission to launch twice weekly flights between Changsha and New York from July 2017. This service, which will also be operated using a B787, will complement the airline’s existing twice weekly Changsha-LA service.
