Aviation’s contribution to Dubai’s GDP is expected to reach AED165 billion, which is equivalent to 32%, up from 28% recorded in 2011.  The aviation sector employs more than five percent of the ‘waged workforce’ in Dubai. These statistics were revealed in the Strategy Plan 2013-2015 of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA).

The strategy plan was based on the directives of Dubai Executive Council and approved by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of DCAA and chairman of Dubai Airports.

HH Sheikh Ahmed said: “The aviation industry in the emirate of Dubai has witnessed a steady growth in the past years and it continues its stride, competing with renowned aviation cities to acquire the highest share of passenger and air traffic. The strategy plan is an ambitious roadmap that will drive and support growth of the aviation industry in the Emirate of Dubai aligned with the Dubai Government strategy and other key stakeholders and players in the industry.”

Aptly titled ‘Shaping Tomorrow’s Aviation (2013-2015)’, the full-cycle strategic plan covers five main pillars that influence the outcome of the aviation sector: Growth, Capacity, Sustainability, Customer and Capability.

A handbook on the new strategy plan will be published in English and Arabic soon to create awareness among aviation industry professionals.  A stakeholders’ conference will also be held for in October for debate on the plan.

Elaborating on the plan, Saif Al Suwaidi, director general of General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) revealed projections of aircraft movements in the UAE until the year 2030.  He said the UAE Flight Information Region (FIR) recorded a total of 741,450 aircraft movements in 2012. The UAE FIR will have 895,468 flight movements in 2015, over 1.13 million flight movements by 2020 and 1.63 million flight movements by 2030.  The GCAA and Airbus Prosky are presently working to restructure UAE airspace while the draft UAE ATM Strategic Plan-2030 has been launched for industry consultation.
