Domestic air passenger traffic jumped 13.4% in September with 45.55 lakh air passengers, as compared to 40.18 lakh
registered during the same month in 2012.
According to the data released by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), between January to September 2013, Indian carriers ferried 456.95 lakh travellers, up 4.2% from the corresponding period in 2012 when carriers registered 438.40 lakh travellers.
The passenger traffic grew by 20.39% in August and stood at 42.60 lakh. “Despite the hike in airfares to an extent of 25-30% , the month of September saw an increase of almost 13% in air traffic compared to the same month last year. In line with the rising demand, the low cost carriers have already expanded their domestic capacity for the coming winter schedule. Looking at the current market trend and the continuing high fares we are still optimistic that air travel shall continue to rise especially with festive season and holidays approaching,” said Sharat Dhall, president of Yatra.com
Data reveals that Air India’s domestic operations achieved the highest overall occupancy in the month under review at 73.2%, followed by IndiGo at 70.3% and SpiceJet at 67.9%. IndiGo remained the largest domestic passenger carrier with market share of 30.3%, followed by Air India (20.3%), Jet Airways (19.1%), SpiceJet (17.3%), GoAir (7.5%) and JetLite (5.5%).
