The European Union has given 10 Chinese and Indian airlines until mid-June to report their carbon emission data, after the carriers failed to meet the earlier 31 March deadline for submissions.
The European bloc’s Climate Action Commissioner, Connie Hedegaar said this week that EU regulators have already been in contact with officials from the two nations “to remind them of their obligations” under the EU’s controversial Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).
It is believed that China’s aviation authorities have ordered the country’s airlines not to cooperate with the EU over the ETS, while Indian carriers are also withholding carbon data.
Several countries, including China, India, the US, Russia, South Korea and Japan, have expressed their opposition to the scheme. China is also believed to have halted orders of wide-body Airbus jets in retaliation.
