ETOA has blasted European package holiday laws as flawed as the European Parliament’s IMCO committee votes on changes to the Package Travel Directive tomorrow (11 Feb).
The association said neither the current or revised directive are ‘fit for purpose’ and still have complexities about which holidays are covered and what isn’t in each individual state.
It warned that some customers in particular EU countries need more protection than others, and that any EU legislation should be at the level of the most regulated country, or allow variations if possible.
“This isn’t an open market: it is an over-regulated mess in which domestic priorities cause EU-wide confusion,” said Tim Fairhurst, head of policy and strategy at ETOA. “The proposed directive remains an ill-informed anachronism dressed up as an enlightened attempt at consumer protection. It is no such thing.”
