A new airline based in southwest China’s Fujian province is set to launch in October 2014.

Fuzhou Airlines, which is majority-owned by Hainan Airlines, will submit an application with the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) at end of April, with the hope of taking off in time for China’s ‘Golden Week’ holidays in October.

The new full-service carrier will be based at Changle International Airport in Fuzhou, the provincial capital of Fujian. This will put it in direct competition with Xiamen Airlines, which is currently the largest of 24 airlines operating at Fuzhou. A subsidiary of Asia’s largest carrier, China Southern Airlines, Xiamen Airlines currently commands approximately 40% market share in Fuzhou.

Initially, Fuzhou Airlines will operate a fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft on major domestic trunk routes.

Once launched, Fuzhou Airlines will join HNA Group’s rapidly expanding portfolio of airlines, which also includes Hainan Airlines, Lucky Air, Tianjin Airlines and Hong Kong Airlines. It also plans to create Urumqi Airlines, based in the northwest region of Xinjiang.
