Garuda Indonesia has launched a new service connecting London and Jakarta.
The Indonesian national carrier’s inaugural flight from London’s Heathrow Airport was flagged off on Thursday night in a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Dr Rizal Sukma, Indonesia’s Ambassador to the UK, Jubi Prasetyo, Garuda’s general manager for the UK & Ireland, and Normand Boivin, Heathrow’s chief operating officer.
Liverpool football legends Ian Rush and Gary McAllister were also present to take part in a penalty shoot-out challenge. Garuda is a sponsor of Liverpool FC.
“We were thrilled to see our first flight from our new UK home at London Heathrow take to the skies. Being the first and only carrier to fly non-stop to Jakarta, we are now the most efficient way to reach Indonesia from the UK,” said Jubi Prasetyo.
The new service will operate five times per week using a three-class Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The London-Jakarta flight will operate direct, while the Jakarta-London leg will include a stop in Singapore.
Garuda said the service will cater to “business travellers travelling to Jakarta and leisure travellers stopping over on their way to… Bali and Lombok”.
Garuda previously operated flights to London’s Gatwick Airport, via Amsterdam.
