Garuda Indonesia will officially join the SkyTeam alliance in March 2014.

The Jakarta-based national carrier was initially announced as a future member of SkyTeam in June, and it has now been confirmed that the airline will complete its integration process on 5 March next year.

“Garuda is on target to meet all the membership criteria required by SkyTeam, including implementing a new IT platform and customer-focused initiatives,” said Michael Wisbrun, SkyTeam’s managing director. “We look forward to welcoming the airline on 5 March.”

The Indonesian carrier’s president & CEO, Emirsyah Satar, called the SkyTeam membership a “significant milestone in the company’s development”

“We are now entering the stage of being a global player. This is part of our strategy to extend our network worldwide while at the same time improving our service by facilitating a seamless and more convenient travel experience for our customers,” Satar said.

Garuda will become SkyTeam’s 20th member airline, and the seventh in Asia Pacific following China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines and Xiamen Airlines.
