Hainan Airlines launched the first commercial flight using its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner service on Thursday (11 July).

The Chinese airline carried 206 passengers on the domestic route from Beijing to Haikou, marking the aircraft’s debut in the southern Chinese island province of Hainan.

Hainan Airlines will now serve the route daily, departing Beijing Capital International Airport at 0800 and arriving at Haikou Meilan International Airport at 1150. The return service leaves the Hainan capital at 1300, getting back into Beijing at 1630.

The airline’s second B787 will also be used domestically, operating the Beijing-Shanghai route following its delivery. Hainan Airlines will then use the fuel-efficient aircraft on trans-Pacific routes to destinations including Chicago, Seattle and Toronto.

Among the passengers on the 787’s maiden voyage was a group of 50 people, including high school graduates, who were given free tickets by Hainan Airlines. They will now spend four days touring Beijing. Onboard the first flight, cabin crew served up Champagne and special ‘Dream’ cookies.

Hainan Airlines has ordered 10 B787 Dreamliners.
