Hilton’s expansion in China reached significant milestone last week with the opening of its first Hampton hotel in a major Chinese city.

The company signed a master development agreement with Plateno Hotels Group for the midscale Hampton brand in China in late 2014, and its first Chinese property opened in the beach resort of Sanya in December 2015. Eventually, the two companies expect to launch of more than 400 Hampton hotels across the country.

And this nationwide roll-out has now taken a major step forward with the opening of the first Hampton by Hilton hotel on the Chinese mainland, located in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou.

“China is the 20th country that Hampton has entered and… we are especially happy that Hampton by Hilton’s flagship hotel has opened in Guangzhou,” said Phil Cordell, global head of the Hampton brand.

“It represents a breakthrough for Hampton’s development in the China market. With a strong partner like Plateno Group, I have every confidence that the brand will achieve a similar success as in the United States.”

Replicating the brand’s US success in China would be a major achievement for Hilton; there are approximately 2,000 Hampton properties currently operating across the US. But it does have good backing; Plateno was recently acquired by Jin Jiang International – the Shanghai government-backed company which is now among the 10 largest hotel groups in the world by portfolio size, following its recent purchases of Plateno and Louvre Hotels.

The 223-room Hampton by Hilton Guangzhou Zhujiang New Town (pictured top) is located in the Tianhe district of Guangzhou, close to the Guangzhou International Finance Center and Guangzhou East Railway Station. The hotel includes a “multi-functional lobby”, free Wi-Fi, 24-hour snack bar, restaurant, meeting room and fitness centre.

“Plateno Group’s collaboration with Hilton Worldwide is in line with our business strategy and is aligned with our values of focusing on our customers’ needs,” said Alex Zheng, Plateno’s founder, chairman & president. “In 2015, Hampton by Hilton was warmly welcomed by investors and travellers. With the opening of Hampton by Hilton Guangzhou Zhujiang New Town, we have opened a new chapter and more than 10 Hampton hotels are scheduled to open this year alone,” he added.

China is one of only two countries in the Asia Pacific region where the Hampton brand operates, along with India.
