Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) continues to experience rising traffic in 2016 and looks set to end the year with a record figures.
The Asian gateway handled 59 million passengers and 343,265 flight movements in the first 10 months of the year, representing year-on-year growth of 3.6% and 2.0% respectively. With just two months of the year to go, HKIA remains on track to exceed its full-year record of 68.5m passengers, set in 2015.
Airlines have continued to expand their operations at HKIA in recent weeks; HK Express commenced flights to Nha Trang and Chiang Rai, and Hong Kong Airlines kicked off services to Auckland.
“We are pleased to see airlines expanding to new destinations and offering more choices to travellers. This additional connectivity will reinforce HKIA’s status as an international aviation hub,” said Henry Ma, Airport Authority Hong Kong’s general manager for airport & industry collaboration.
Typhoon Haima disrupted airport operations in October 2016, which was reflected in the slight declines in traffic seen last month, when passenger numbers fell 0.9% to 5.7 million and flight movements dipped 0.6% to 34,610.
But for the last 12 months, on a rolling basis, HKIA has now handled more than 70m passengers.
