The rapid growth in traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) continued in the first two months of 2015.
Having handled a record 63.4 million passengers in 2014, the airport welcomed 10.6m passengers in January and February 2015, up 7.5% compared to the same period last year. Flight movements increased 5.1% to 64,580.
In February alone, HKIA’s passenger traffic jumped 13.6%, and the airport set a new daily passenger record during the month.
“Fuelled by the high demand during the Chinese New Year peak travel season, HKIA set a new daily passenger volume record of more than 228,000 on 23 February,” said CK Ng, executive director of airport operations at Hong Kong’s Airport Authority.
“While the airport is becoming busier and busier, the airport community continues to uphold the highest levels of service quality, safety and efficiency, which resulted in smooth operations during this year’s Chinese New Year traffic peak.”
HKIA said the growth of passenger traffic in January and February was mainly driven by a 16% year-on-year rise in transfer and transit traffic, and an 8% increase in Hong Kong resident traffic. Passenger traffic on routes to and from Southeast Asia and North Asia also recorded significant growth.
On a rolling 12-month basis, passenger traffic increased by 5.9% to 64.1m, while flight movements climbed 4.9% to 394,100.
