The construction of a new Midfield Concourse at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is on track and expected to open by the end of 2015.
The project update was provided during the recent visit of Jack So Chak-kwong, chairman of Airport Authority Hong Kong, to the site, where he was briefed on the project’s progress.
“The Midfield Concourse can help meet HKIA’s increasing aviation demand in medium term,” said So. “However, as the current two-runway system will meet its practical maximum capacity in one or two years, the airport urgently needs a three runway system to cater for its long-term need of passenger and cargo growth, as well as maintain Hong Kong’s status as an international and regional aviation hub.”
The Midfield Concourse is located to the west of Terminal 1 and between the two existing runways. The development includes a five-storey concourse area with 20 parking stands, and an extended automated people mover system that will connect travellers to Terminal 1.
Following the opening of the Midfield Concourse in the fourth quarter of 2015, HKIA will be able to serve an additional 10 million passengers a year.
Earlier this year, HKIA got the green light to proceed with plans for its third runway. To be developed on 650 hectares of reclaimed land, the project will also include the creation of new taxiways and aprons, a new concourse, an expanded Terminal 2, a baggage handling system and another automated people mover to connect passengers with the main terminal.
Costing HK$141.5 billion (US$18.2bn) to develop, construction will commence in 2016 and is expected to be completed by 2023.
HKIA handled a record 63.38 million passengers and 390,955 flight movements in 2014, and is on track to exceed these figures this year.
